Should I Use Rolled Roofing For My Roof?

Posted on

Asphalt shingles are among the cheapest and easiest roofing materials to install. However, if you need a material that is even more affordable in the short term, you might choose roof rolling. This roofing option will protect your roof until you are able to install a more long-term roofing solution. However, you will eventually want to have a permanent roof installed by a roofing contractor.

Mineral-Surface Roofing

Roof rolling involves the use of a material known as mineral-surface roofing. The material comes in several colors. It can only be used on a roof that has a low slope or no slope because steeper roofs will cause the material to slide off.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer

Some roof rolling materials are made out of rubber and other materials are made from lighter materials such as Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer. The latter also uses adhesives to prevent leaking.

Roof Rolling Vs. Traditional Roofing

While cheap and convenient, rolled roofing is not something you should use if you will be selling your home because it will reduce the resale value. Also, you will not want to use this material for a building that will be an occupied structure. Instead, roof rolling is a temporary option.

For some structures on your property, such as a tool shed or a kids clubhouse, you might decide to use roof rolling to protect the building and to prevent moisture from entering your building. However, it's important to keep in mind that roof rolling is not very durable.

If you install a real roof on your structure, you will not have to worry as much about debris damaging the roof. For example, if there are strong winds or hail, your roof will be more capable of resisting it if you have another type of roofing material installed such as metal panels.

The Beautification of Your Roof

Rolled roofing is much less attractive than having shingles installed. Certain roofing materials can look gorgeous. On the other hand, rolled roofing is so unattractive that some homeowners' associations do not even allow a homeowner to use the material.

While having a roof installed can allow you to choose any color you want, your options are much more limited with rolled roofing. You may want to install a lighter roof that will reflect sunlight. But regardless of what you do, a roofing contractor will make sure that your roof is installed properly.
